European shares subdued as surging crude sharpens focus on ECB rate path

European shares closed largely flat as higher oil prices and renewed US-Iran tensions raised inflation concerns, offsetting stronger euro zone economic data. Energy stocks gained, while Novartis fell after its cholesterol drug failed a key study. Investors also raised bets on further ECB rate hikes, including a possible December move.
